Today is Earth Day! It’s a day in which all of us can appreciate this beautiful planet in which we live, and reflect on our own individual efforts to lower our carbon footprint.

Over the past few years, Bulwark Exterminating has made many efforts to go green and do their part to save the planet, all while increasing customer satisfaction.

Bulwark Exterminating, who has a branch in Las Vegas, NV, has made many efforts to go paperless and go green. These efforts save some 60,000 sheets of paper per month. Here are just a few examples:

• Pest control service tickets are being emailed to customers as well.

• Sales contracts can now be completed electronically.

Going Green: Paperless Routing

One component to “going green,” is going paperless. Bulwark Pest Control of Las Vegas is now paperless.

Bulwark technicians used to have to drive in to the office every morning, and print off routes, customer information, and service notes. This created a lot of unnecessary paperwork.

Now, smart phone technology and special software allows Bulwark’s technicians to start servicing customers as soon as they leave their home. Each morning, technicians receive an email on their smart phones. With these emails, technicians are able to access their routes, customer contact information and custom service notes for each customers. No more redundant paperwork.

With these above mentioned combined efforts, Bulwark Exterminating has been able to effectively get rid of 60,000 sheets of paper a month! This will save a lot of trees.

Helping To Save The Planet

Paper production is the second largest user of energy and water when it comes to manufacturing in the United States. Paper production is also the third largest contributor to pollution. Reducing paper usage by 60 percent will eliminate over 200 lbs of greenhouse gas a year.

A small business can use at least of 10,000 pieces of paper each year… Per employee! That’s crazy! An average tree will fabricate almost 17 reams of paper. With the average small business employee responsible for using 1.2 trees a year just to do their job, some 178 million trees are no longer part of our eco system.

Las Vegas Bedbugs

Bedbug infestations continue to rise across much of the United States, and the State of Nevada is not exempt form these tiny hitchhiking pests. Currently, the city of Las Vegas is the 46th ranked bedbug infested city in the country. While these numbers are drastically improved, down 30 spots from last year’s ranking, bedbugs are still a problem in the city.

Nevada Bedbug Laws

Currently, there are 22 States in the U.S. with bedbug laws. As of 3/2013, there are two bedbug laws in the books for the state of Nevada. With proposed bedbug legislation being brought to the table on a frequent basis, these laws can change. They are as follows:

• Extermination– Nevada Revised Code 447.030

Any room in any hotel in Nevada that is infested with bedbugs shall be thoroughly fumigated, disinfected and renovated until such bedbugs are entirely exterminated.

• Sanitation– Nevada Revised Code 444

In a camp, proper bedbug prevention measures must be taken.

Bulwark Pest Control On Episode of A&E’s “Flipping Vegas”

Bulwark Exterminating recently got a call came from the producers of A&E’s hit show “Flipping Vegas,” and were happy to help out with a very dangerous problem.

“Flipping Vegas” On A&E

Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino Restaurant Battling Pests

New findings from the Las Vegas, NV health department may have guests of the Golden Nugget cringing. The Southern Nevada Health District closed down the hotel and casino’s 24 hour a day café. The health department also closed down the employee dining room citing 27 problems with pests like roaches, and for unsanitary conditions.

Guests at the 24 Hour Carson Street Café inside the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino are being turned away. The employee restaurant is also closed down citing numerous health code violations. Both are closed indefinitely as The Golden Nugget launches a full investigation into what went wrong. The Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino is one of the oldest hotels and casinos in Las Vegas. Recent upgrades were designed to draw tourists in, but inside the restaurant is currently sitting empty.

The Las Vegas Health Department gave The Golden Nugget’s Carson Street Café and employee restaurant demerits for lack of “effective pest control measures.” Representatives for the Golden Nugget say they are working diligently to reopen the employee restaurant and the Carson Street Café as soon a possible. This is welcome news for the many tourists who flock to Las Vegas and feel that the Golden Nugget is a downtown staple.

The health department says its goal is to work with the Golden Nugget to get effective pest control measures that will prevent pest infestations like this from happening again.

“We are clearly upset and disappointed that somebody dropped the ball. This should never happen. We retain the services of a professional outdoor vendor, and are angry and disappointed that this happened. A full investigation is being launched as to how this occurred, and we assure all of our guests that it will not happen again.”

Watch Out For Pests Hiding In Your Christmas Decor

Most of you have boxes and boxes full of Christmas lights, ceramic figurines, Christmas wrapping paper, and wreathes. You likely store these boxes in a garage, in your basement, or in the attic; all places Las Vegas pests love to hide when the weather cools. Here are a few holiday decorating tips that will ensure you don’t bring about a full on pest infestation inside your home.

First, examine Christmas boxes. If there are any pests living among your Christmas decorations, they will leave some evidence. Look for discarded shells of seeds or nuts. Rodent droppings are also an obvious clue of a pest problem. Look for the dead carcasses of silverfish or roaches. Where there are dead insects there are usually living ones… Plus, spiders and scorpions will be feeding on them.

Cautiously handle boxes. Use caution and be alert when you open those boxes of Christmas decorations. If there is a scorpion, spider, or rodent living inside; a misplaced hand could result in a painful bite or sting.

Open decorations outside first. By doing this you will keep from bringing any unwanted bugs or disease carrying rodents inside your home.

Inspect your Christmas tree. Whether your Christmas tree is real or fake, it needs to be thoroughly inspected for any evidence of pests. Rodents like mice, squirrels, and rats love making their nests inside artificial trees. If you buy a live tree on a lot, or cut one down yourself, look for signs of aphids, and other small tree insects. You won’t want them crawling all over you.

The Not-So-Fun Facts About Cockroaches

Cockroaches are equal opportunity invaders. Regardless of who a person is, how they make a living, or where they reside, cockroaches can be a problem. Roaches enter homes and businesses through cracks and crevices in the walls and floors. They walk through open doors and stowaway in empty boxes from the storage shed.

Cockroaches are waterproof. A thick protective coating of waxes and oils keeps the cockroach from drying out. Without this coating, the insect dies of dehydration. To preserve this coating, roaches groom themselves regularly, brushing their “hairs,” combing antennae and rubbing up against objects to stimulate productions of body oils.

Cockroaches are killed off by eye wash. Boric cid, the antiseptic powder used in eye washes, is extremely effective in roach control. Cockroaches don’t recognize boric acid as a poison, so they walk right through it. The powder sticks to their legs and antennae, and they ingest it while cleaning themselves. Within a day or two, the roach is dead.

Cockroaches are not equipped to swim underwater. While the roach’s waterproof coating allows it to float, the insect cannot swim. So contrary to popular opinion, cockroaches do not come up household drains from the sewer—water in the traps keep them out. If a home is left empty, or a drain is not used for awhile, traps can dry out and allow roaches to come through.

Cockroaches carry disease like the postman carries mail. Roaches are naturally contaminated with about 40 different types of bacteria, including those that carry leprosy, bubonic plaque, dysentery, diarrhea, urinary tract infections, food poisoning, and typhoid fever. They also harbor polio viruses and eggs of parasitic worms. By walking and feeding on filth, roaches pick up germs at one point, and deposit them somewhere else. With that being said, roaches have never been found to cause an epidemic.

Cockroach Control

It’s no mystery that cockroaches are common place here in Las Vegas, NV. They are becoming more and more prevalent because they are becoming more resistant to insecticides that where once figured to be effective. Scorpions are one of Las Vegas NV’s most dreaded and misunderstood pests. This fear is a result of their frightening appearance, and their capability to sting the unsuspecting public. This fear has also led to a few popular myths about these Las Vegas pests:

1.  All scorpions are killers. Being stung by a scorpion is usually not fatal, unless they sting small children, the elderly, or someone with a week immune system. Out of the 1,500 different species of scorpions found around the world, only 25 species have venom that is powerful enough to kill humans. The most poisonous scorpion, the Arizona Bark Scorpion, is found in Las Vegas. The stings of the other species are usually not serious and usually result in localized pain with some swelling and tenderness. Some people are allergic to scorpion venom, and if a sting seems serious, call the National Poison Control Center toll-free at (800) 222-1222.

2.  Scorpion venom is lethal. Their neurotoxins only target specific kinds of prey, usually different species of insects. For humans, a scorpion sting is usually less painful than a wasp or bee sting. I wouldn’t recommend going out and getting stung by a scorpion to find out, but it’s important to understand that they are not as lethal as some folks believe. Scorpion venom destroys red blood cells, producing localized discoloration at the sting site and painful swelling.

3.  The bigger the scorpion, the deadlier. The opposite is actually true. While all bark scorpions are dangerous, the smaller one’s venom is more potent.

4.  Scorpions can commit suicide with their own venom. The muscular and nervous systems of scorpions are actually not affected by the molecules contained in scorpion venom.

5.  Scorpions prefer living inside homes. A scorpion’s natural habitat is the outdoors. Some species make burrows, while others just hide under logs, rocks, boards, and trash. Bark scorpions live on vertical surfaces such as trees, bushes, and walls. They sometimes do wander into our homes looking for water which debunks another myth that scorpions don’t drink.

6.  Scorpions can breath underwater. Have you ever worried about swimming in a pool on a hot Las Vegas afternoon, and being stung by a live scorpion? Rest easy. Although scorpions can hold their breath for several minutes, they are poor swimmers and cannot breath underwater.

7.  Surrounding a scorpion with a ring of fire will result in it stinging itself to death. This is a myth that has been retold for many years. Although the scorpion would become highly agitated, it wouldn’t be able to kill itself. Like I mention before, scorpions are immune to their own venom.

8.  Black scorpions are more deadly then pale ones. Although the black scorpions are bigger and more menacing in appearance, just the opposite is true. Watch out for the small yellowish ones.
9.  Pouring liquor on a scorpion kills it.

10. You cannot kill scorpions with pest control products. This may have been the case 20 years ago, but with innovation and technology this statement doesn’t hold true anymore. Las Vegas pest control companies offer state-of-the-art effective pest control products.

This Nation’s bedbug problem is real, and a growing area of concern in Las Vegas, NV.
