The Battle Against Bugs: 3 Reasons Why You’re Losing The Fight

Pests don’t discriminate; they flock in equal numbers to homes, apartments, condos and townhouses. Regardless of where you live, you have probably encountered bugs in your living space on more than one occasion. For many, it often seems that as soon as they fix one pest problem, another equally annoying bug makes its presence known. This is frustrating and confusing, particularly if you feel you’ve taken the appropriate steps to protect your home. Why is it that bugs keep coming back time and time again? The following information will provide you with a little insight into the situation.

Supply and Demand

Just like people, bugs have to eat to survive. You have a readily available source of food, and the pests near your home can smell it. They also realize that in order to access their next meal, they have to gain entry into your living space. Whether it’s ants, a mouse or even a few roaches, the pests are going to keep coming back as long as your home has food in it.

Rapid Reproduction

Unlike people, pests tend to reproduce in very large numbers. In particular, spiders and insects may have several hundred babies at one time. This rapid reproduction has a significant impact on your efforts to control the number of pests in your home. For example, most bugs, when faced with having to feed such a large number of offspring, will become very persistent in their efforts to gain entry into your home. After all, once inside, they can provide their little ones with a nearly unlimited supply of food, as well as shelter. Also, if the bugs lay eggs inside your living space, you may find that those eggs are not affected by pest sprays. Therefore, just when you think you have the problem under control, the eggs hatch and everything starts all over again.

Unfavorable Weather Conditions

Some bugs are tougher than others. For example, roaches deal well with extreme temperatures, rain and a number of other weather conditions. However, other pests aren’t so resilient. Bed bugs, for instance, prefer to be warm and will therefore do everything in their power to get inside your home in the wintertime. Once they get used to their surroundings, they are unlikely to leave, even as the seasons change. They are just one example of the many pests that make comfort a priority, hijacking your living space and making themselves at home despite your best efforts to ward them off.

If you are having trouble getting rid of pests, remember that the situation does not illustrate a failure on your part. As the examples above have shown, most bugs are determined, resilient little creatures that are seeking food and shelter. Try to use this knowledge in your favor as you continue the battle to keep these pesky creatures outside, where they belong.

It’s Not Really Valentine’s Day Unless It Happens In Vegas

Is there really a better way to spend Valentine’s Day than in Las Vegas? Everything magical and mysterious about Las Vegas is literally within walking distance down Las Vegas Blvd. Need a flower shop? We have a few of those. Need a drive-thru wedding chapel? We hear “The Fast Lane” wedding chapel is the place to go, with your selection of three different wedding packages. (Ok, I just Googled that. No one at Bulwark, that we know of, has had first, second or third hand experience with said location)

That said, there are lots of fun things to do around the city on Valentine’s Day. Stop by the M&M Store and get creative with your partner. After that, head over to the Coca-Cola store and sample all the international flavors. If you’re looking for some of Vegas’ finest food establishments, then consider Alize, Nove Italiano or Foundation Room.

If you’re the do-it-yourself kind of person, and can’t leave the fate of your relationship or marriage in the hands of your waiter at Alize or the cashier at the M&M Store, then you’ll probably opt for something homemade and in the privacy of your own home. A nice candlelight dinner perhaps. A little bit of wine, some nice hors d’oeuvres, and eventually a main dish that you’ve been slow roasting in the oven for the past 8 hours.

The meal is done, but the night is far from over. You have a few more tricks up your sleeve that are sure to make this night the most memorable since the Ravens upset the 49ers 10 days early in the Super Bowl. You lead her upstairs, eyes closed.

But while you couldn’t put Valentine’s Day in the hands of your waiter, maybe you should’ve put it in the hands of… your pest control guy!

“Flipping Vegas” On A&E

Since the housing bubble burst in 2008, the Las Vegas housing market has been flooded with unsold and foreclosed properties. Since then, Sin City has been left with thousands of empty homes in desperate need of a makeover to entice buyers. That is where the show “Flipping Vegas” comes in.

“Flipping Vegas” follows Scott Yancey and his team of interior designers, project managers, and real estate agents on their quest to renovate rundown homes and sell them for a profit. Despite all the drama and unforeseen roadblocks (like scorpions), the team always finishes what they start – leaving behind a beautiful new home, and excited new homeowners.

The show is currently on it’s second season, and is A&E’s most watched reality television program.

Las Vegas Scorpions

Each year millions of visitors flock to the entertainment capital of the World because of Las Vegas’ daytime family friendly attractions and it’s nighttime entertainment. Tourists aren’t the only visitors to make their presence known in Sin City. Las Vegas, NV is also home to scorpions. Some unfortunate neighborhoods, like the one featured in the “Flipping Out” episode, have many of them.

Las Vegas scorpion problems are on the rise. The scary creepy crawlers have invaded the valley in large numbers recently. It’s not unusual, given that the city is in a desert, to see one once in a while. But lately there have been reports of people finding many scorpions in their garages, homes and beds.

Scorpions can be very dangerous with their venomous stings. One of the most venomous scorpions in the country, the bark scorpion, happens to found all around the Las Vegas valley. A bark scorpion sting may only cause a small reaction in adults, but children or seniors could suffer a much more serious reaction if stung; including possible death.

Bed Bugs: What Are They and How Do You Control Them?

A bed bug nymph feeding on host

A bed bug nymph feeding on host (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

What happens if you have a bed-bug infestation? Bed bugs in a home can bring about a number of health conditions, including allergies, skin rashes and even psychological effects. If bitten, you may experience symptoms on your skin such as itching and redness. Bed bugs feed on blood, usually that of animals, but they will move on to humans if it is the only blood available. Bed lice are attracted by carbon dioxide, warmth and certain chemicals and tend to live longer in colder temperatures.

How Do They Spread?

Your house can become infected with bed bugs for various reasons. They can be carried on other people’s clothes, luggage or infested pets. If a nearby house or flat is infested, the bed bugs can move through walls or false ceilings. Some animals, such as bats and birds, can also bring them into buildings. The source of infestations also includes eggs which may have been laid in the seams of clothing.

How Can I Detect Them?

Bed bugs are usually nocturnal so it can be difficult to spot them. They tend to nest in dark areas and often lay thousands of eggs in the seams of fabrics. Signs that you may have a bed-bug infestation include bites on the body, droppings similar in appearance to sand, spots of blood on bed sheets and patches of skin which they have shed (this is actually an exoskeleton which is moulted). Bed bugs have a characteristic smell of rotten raspberries. The most accurate way to find the exact location of an infestation is with a bed-bug-detection dog, which speeds up the process considerably

Why Are Infestations So Frequent?

Between the 1930s and 1980s, the rate of outbreaks fell dramatically. However, since the 1980s infestations have seen a sharp increase. It has been suggested that this is because of resistance to pesticides and an increase in international travel, which helps the insects spread. There are several different species of bed bug around the world, but it is the common bed bug which is most adapted to human environments.

How Can They Be Eradicated?

It is a good idea to call in a professional who is used to tackling bed-bug outbreaks. When it comes to pest control services Dublin residents have a range of companies to choose from. They tend to approach the issue with several different approaches at a time, using both pesticide and non-pesticide methods. The most effective seems to be a combination of heating and drying the affected area.

Golden Nugget Dining Areas Shut Down Because Of Pest Infestation

Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino Restaurant Battling Pests

Golden Nugget Las Vegas

Golden Nugget Las Vegas (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

New findings from the Las Vegas, NV health department may have guests of the Golden Nugget cringing. The Southern Nevada Health District closed down the hotel and casino’s 24 hour a day café. The health department also closed down the employee dining room citing 27 problems with pests like roaches, and for unsanitary conditions.

Guests at the 24 Hour Carson Street Café inside the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino are being turned away. The employee restaurant is also closed down citing numerous health code violations. Both are closed indefinitely as The Golden Nugget launches a full investigation into what went wrong. The Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino is one of the oldest hotels and casinos in Las Vegas. Recent upgrades were designed to draw tourists in, but inside the restaurant is currently sitting empty.

The Las Vegas Health Department gave The Golden Nugget’s Carson Street Café and employee restaurant demerits for lack of “effective pest control measures.” Representatives for the Golden Nugget say they are working diligently to reopen the employee restaurant and the Carson Street Café as soon a possible. This is welcome news for the many tourists who flock to Las Vegas and feel that the Golden Nugget is a downtown staple.

The health department says its goal is to work with the Golden Nugget to get effective pest control measures that will prevent pest infestations like this from happening again.

Statement From Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino

“We are clearly upset and disappointed that somebody dropped the ball. This should never happen. We retain the services of a professional outdoor vendor, and are angry and disappointed that this happened. A full investigation is being launched as to how this occurred, and we assure all of our guests that it will not happen again.”

Effective Pest Control

Effective pest control is essentially a pest control service that delivers what it promises. After receiving a pest control treatment, you should not be seeing pests like roaches, spiders, or scorpions near in your home. If one of these creepy crawlies does happen to get past the pest barrier, an immediate re-treatment should be available free of charge. Look for a Las Vegas pest control company that guarantees their effectiveness.

It’s safe to say somebody dropped the ball at The Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino.

Watch For Pests Hiding In Your Christmas Decorations

Christmas Pests

The magical Christmas season is finally here. The joyous event of decorating your home with all those beautiful decorations could be less joyous with an unfortunate encounter with a pest hiding in your decorations. Pests can quickly make the happiest time of year, into a time of worry and frustration.

Pests like scorpions, spiders, rodents, and silverfish love hiding out among your boxes of Christmas decorations. There are a few things that you can do to help ensure your Christmas is free of pests that may be hiding in your decorations.

Watch Out For Pests Hiding In Your Christmas Decor

Most of you have boxes and boxes full of Christmas lights, ceramic figurines, Christmas wrapping paper, and wreathes. You likely store these boxes in a garage, in your basement, or in the attic; all places Las Vegas pests love to hide when the weather cools. Here are a few holiday decorating tips that will ensure you don’t bring about a full on pest infestation inside your home.

First, examine Christmas boxes. If there are any pests living among your Christmas decorations, they will leave some evidence. Look for discarded shells of seeds or nuts. Rodent droppings are also an obvious clue of a pest problem. Look for the dead carcasses of silverfish or roaches. Where there are dead insects there are usually living ones… Plus, spiders and scorpions will be feeding on them.

Cautiously handle boxes. Use caution and be alert when you open those boxes of Christmas decorations. If there is a scorpion, spider, or rodent living inside; a misplaced hand could result in a painful bite or sting.

Open decorations outside first. By doing this you will keep from bringing any unwanted bugs or disease carrying rodents inside your home.

Inspect your Christmas tree. Whether your Christmas tree is real or fake, it needs to be thoroughly inspected for any evidence of pests. Rodents like mice, squirrels, and rats love making their nests inside artificial trees. If you buy a live tree on a lot, or cut one down yourself, look for signs of aphids, and other small tree insects. You won’t want them crawling all over you.

Get Las Vegas pest control. If you do happen to find any signs of pests living among your Christmas decorations, get professional help. A licensed Las Vegas exterminator can rid you of any of the above mentioned pests; and ensure your Christmas is pest free.

Happy Thanksgiving From Bulwark Exterminating

This truly is the most wonderful time of year. Amid all the traffic jams, long lines and Walmart chaos, people are sincerely more concerned about spending time with family, strengthening bonds and helping our fellow men. Regardless of politics, religion or creed, there exists a palpable sense of giving and sharing in the air.

Bulwark Exterminating would like to, first and foremost,  thank our thousands of wonderful customers across the Las Vegas valley. We truly believe we have the best customers in the industry. We receive positive feedback every day on each of our many review profiles online. Our Facebook wall is constantly updated with comments of praise for our technicians.

Our technicians spend more time with our customers than they do with each other, or even their own family. In a sense, our customers in Las Vegas have become apart of the Bulwark family.

We hope everyone has a very happy and safe Thanksgiving weekend. Whether you are traveling or staying home, we wish you all the best as you take the next few days to spend with friends and family.

But amid the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving, might we offer a few suggestions to make the absolutely most of your holiday weekend.

1. Play in a Turkey Bowl.  Why not burn a few extra calories in the morning before we all stuff our bellies. Remember to be safe!

2. Catch a movie. A tradition for many, watch a movie at the theater after Thanksgiving dinner or the following day on Black Friday while everyone else is fighting each other in store lines.

3. Make desert for someone special. Avoiding pies, make a unique treat for a friend or neighbor and pass it by their door.

4. Movie marathon. Not in the mood for the theaters, buy your own popcorn, stay in your pajamas, and try to get through an entire movie or TV series. Make it a later nighter!

5. Volunteer. By far our biggest recommendation on the list, take time to volunteer with a charity of your choosing. A soup kitchen, a shelter, an all-women’s house, a toy drive, etc. No amount of fun and laughing can ever be more meaningful than giving of ourselves to the welfare of others. Most of us have everything we need, but there are many that don’t. Even if you aren’t able to volunteer this weekend, remember to be kind and understanding of one another, and help in little ways where ever you can.

From Bulwark Exterminating – Happy Thanksgiving!

Common Las Vegas Ants

Ants

Ants are social insects. They are also considered generalist predators, scavengers and indirect herbivores. This pest has colonized almost every landmass in the World. The only regions that lack indigenous ants, are Antarctica and a few large islands; such as Greenland, Iceland, (parts of) Polynesia and the Hawaiian Islands. These common pests form colonies that range in size from a few dozen predatory individuals, to highly organized colonies which sometimes occupy large areas; consisting of millions of ants.

Las Vegas Ants

The city of Las Vegas has several ant species that can be a nuisance. They also can cause pain from stings/bites; they can spoil your food, and damage and your property. The Las Vegas ant scene is dominated primarily by the Argentine ant and the Pharaoh ant.
argentine ant

Argentine Ants

Though the Argentine Ant is a small, non-stinging ant, it is very territorial and aggressive and will drive away or kill competing ant species. They make a chemical called iridomyr-mecin which they smear on their enemies to kill them or make them run away. Neighboring colonies of Argentine ants appear not to be aggressive toward each other, allowing for the rapid spread and domination of this species. More…

English: Profile view of ant Monomorium pharao...

Pharaoh Ants

Tiny pharaoh ants become a huge problem when they inhabit structures. Colonies can become very large, with several hundred thousand workers and many queens. In response to repellent chemicals, colonies often split off into new colonies. Workers will forage for food hundreds of feet from the colony and find their way back using trails established by pheromones. Pharaoh ants have a strong desire for moisture and nests may be established in almost any void or large crevice, as well as outdoors in the soil under debris or objects. More…

Las Vegas Ant Control

Ants attack and defend themselves by biting, and in some cases; stinging. An ant sting often results in the injection, or spraying, of a chemical like formic acid. As such, some ant species are widely considered a pest control problem. Unfortunately, because of the adaptive nature of most ant colonies, eliminating the entire group is nearly impossible. Therefore, it becomes a matter of controlling the local pest population, rather than exterminating the entire colony.

If you are a Las Vegas resident, and need help controlling the ant population around your home, contact a local pest control professional today! Whether it’s Argentine, Fire, or Black Ants you are dealing with, a pest control professional will have a solution to your ant problem

5 Interesting Facts About Cockroaches

English: High detail closeup of a cockroach.

English: High detail closeup of a cockroach. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The Not-So-Fun Facts About Cockroaches

Cockroaches are equal opportunity invaders. Regardless of who a person is, how they make a living, or where they reside, cockroaches can be a problem. Roaches enter homes and businesses through cracks and crevices in the walls and floors. They walk through open doors and stowaway in empty boxes from the storage shed.

Cockroaches are waterproof. A thick protective coating of waxes and oils keeps the cockroach from drying out. Without this coating, the insect dies of dehydration. To preserve this coating, roaches groom themselves regularly, brushing their “hairs,” combing antennae and rubbing up against objects to stimulate productions of body oils.

Cockroaches are killed off by eye wash. Boric cid, the antiseptic powder used in eye washes, is extremely effective in roach control. Cockroaches don’t recognize boric acid as a poison, so they walk right through it. The powder sticks to their legs and antennae, and they ingest it while cleaning themselves. Within a day or two, the roach is dead.

Cockroaches are not equipped to swim underwater. While the roach’s waterproof coating allows it to float, the insect cannot swim. So contrary to popular opinion, cockroaches do not come up household drains from the sewer—water in the traps keep them out. If a home is left empty, or a drain is not used for awhile, traps can dry out and allow roaches to come through.

Cockroaches carry disease like the postman carries mail. Roaches are naturally contaminated with about 40 different types of bacteria, including those that carry leprosy, bubonic plaque, dysentery, diarrhea, urinary tract infections, food poisoning, and typhoid fever. They also harbor polio viruses and eggs of parasitic worms. By walking and feeding on filth, roaches pick up germs at one point, and deposit them somewhere else. With that being said, roaches have never been found to cause an epidemic.

Cockroach Control

It’s no mystery that cockroaches are common place here in Las Vegas, NV. They are becoming more and more prevalent because they are becoming more resistant to insecticides that where once figured to be effective. If you are a Las Vegas, NV resident, and have cockroaches inside your home, try eliminating them with boric acid. In the likelihood the boric acid doesn’t take care of the problem, contact a local pest control professional today!
