There is actually a huge range of reactions that can occur from a scorpion sting. Severe reactions are more likely to occur with individuals who have existing insect allergies (bee stings).
- Mild to severe pain
- Difficulty breathing
- Blurred vision
- Twitching muscles
- Numbness in mouth or face
- Sensation of thick tongue
Most of these reactions would be deemed as severe, with the exception of the mild pain. Under these conditions it would be best to seek medical assistance immediately; after a suspected scorpion sting. Although rare, scorpion stings have lead to respiratory failure, coma, organ disease or failure and even fatality.
Scorpion First Aid
First off, if you have a compromised immune system, have insect allergies, or the victim is a child or elderly person; seek medical attention as soon as possible. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
All other victims of scorpion stings can treat the ailment at home. Wash the sting area with hot soapy water, dry, and then apply Bactine. To reduce the swelling, ice the sting in increments of ten minutes. Stay calm, elevate the sting area, and take some Tylenol (not aspirin or ibuprofen).
While Bark Scorpion stings can be deadly, most are comparable to the sting from a bee or wasp. Deaths from a scorpion are far more common in other parts of the globe. Brazil for example has nearly 50 scorpion sting related deaths each and every year. A sting will not spread any sort of disease.
