The 4 Most Disease-Spreading Insects
Bugs, insects, spiders; no matter what name you give these pests it makes your skin crawl to think of them. Not all bugs and insects are dangerous, some are even helpful. The ones we want to avoid are the ones that cause diseases. These are the top four to try to keep out of your yard and home.
Ticks and their diseases are often in the news.
Ticks are not insects but are arachnids, related to spiders. However, they may be the number one pest to avoid. Lyme disease is just one of many diseases that are carried by ticks. They can also bite and infect you with various types of spotted fever and typhus. Ticks are usually found in wooded and grassy areas. Protect your pets and your children from becoming host to these external parasites that suck your blood and spread so many illnesses. Use insect repellents to help keep ticks away. After a day outside in wooded and grassy areas, check yourself, your children and your pets to make sure that there are no ticks hitch hiking and feeding on their blood. The illnesses that ticks carry can cause damage that will affect your health for life.
Mosquitoes are the spring and summer invaders.
Although mosquitoes can hatch and spread disease any day of the year they are generally associated with warm weather. The first step in controlling mosquitoes is to empty all standing water in your yard. In ponds and lakes fish and water fowl will eat the larvae and help control these disease spreading pests. Commercial insect repellants that contain DEET are effective against mosquitoes. Citronella products also repel them, so enjoy citronella candles and torches when you gather on the porch or lawn.
Diseases that are spread by mosquitoes include heart worm in your dog. They carry a variety of encephalitis diseases including equine encephalitis. Other diseases that mosquitoes carry are West Nile Virus, Yellow Fever and Dengue. These viruses can be deadly in humans.
Fleas are more than just a nuisance.
We know that fleas make our pets uncomfortable, but we seldom think of them as being more than just an annoying problem for our pets. Throughout history fleas have carried all forms of the plague around the world. Use flea control methods on your pets, and in your yard. Treat your carpet with flea killers and your furniture as well. Plant pet safe herbs around your yard and the foundation of your home to repel fleas. Use baking soda or salt in your carpet, let it sit overnight and vacuum it up to kill flea eggs. If you still have fleas, call the exterminator, and have your pet professionally groomed.
Cockroaches, also known as roaches are a pervasive pest.
Roaches have been known to carry as many as thirty bacterial diseases that infect humans. They feed on waste and feces then carry that filth with them as they crawl about our homes. It is difficult to successfully eradicate roaches and usually control is only achieved by professional exterminator contracts. It has been said that the world could be destroyed and the cockroaches would still survive.
It is hard to imagine that four such small creatures can cause so much illness and death. Use safe and effective methods to rid your world of these pests.
